The power of human brain has always been incomparable in terms of intelligence. But with time will the baton be passed on to another entity smarter, more advanced and more independent?
AI sometimes called machine intelligence replicates the function of human brain to think and act humanly and rationally.
It comes as no surprise that the technology of the modern day has reached its heights with cutting edge innovations. Concepts of the old continue to get redefined as human needs are ever so fluid. The question raised by the Mathematician Alan Turing more than half a century ago ”can machines think” has been getting novel answers throughout the decades to come.
The topic of computer science reached a momentous milestone with the consequent findings related to Artificial Intelligence. As incredible as it may sound AI is slowly seeping into the lifestyles of many people across the continents and oceans. That is why we at Orel IT have a team carrying out extensive research on Artificial Intelligence to keep up with the industry 4.0 of Sri Lanka.
So what exactly is Artificial Intelligence? Even though it can be simply put as the ability for computer systems to function intelligently and independently the science behind the subject runs deeper. Building a replica of human brain in a computer system to fuel cognitive skills in machines is to show that machines are capable of performing actions that are similar or equal to that of humans. And yes they are performed in AI without the assistance of a human further fueling the category of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
“90% of vehicle accidents are a result of human error” says Christopher Marnat, Executive Vice President ZF Electronics and ADAS Division in the article Why Autonomy is Both Revolutionary and Evolutionary.
A revolutionary step in motor manufacturing industry is the invention of self-driving cars. Then how far have we traveled in the AI journey on a global scale? AI generally falls under two main categories, namely Narrow Intelligence and Artificial General Intelligence. The IT experts have already established Narrow Intelligence and therefore it is almost everywhere around us. Autonomous cars as mentioned earlier along with other inventions such as Google Search, Siri and Alexa, Face Recognition software are some of the examples of Narrow Intelligence people use on regular basis.
Among numerous breakthroughs in the domain of AI, the invention of OrCam MyEye 2.0 by Prof. Amnon Shahua and Ziv Aviram made another impossibility possible. The visually impaired people have now the possibility to see the world with this advanced assistive wearable device as the device conveys visual information audibly. Orel IT took the initiative to get across the device to Sri Lanka reshaping the use of AI in the local community.
The emergence of Artificial General Information may not be clear on the horizon yet but it is important to note that researches continue. The level of human intelligence is not thus far achieved by anyone or anything else for that matter. Fear not as it might not get to the extreme level of an apocalyptic movie where super intelligent machines overpower mankind like in Ex-Machina! Or at least not in the foreseeable future?
