Tech Talk

Mahesh sees the new world of AI as the biggest excitement and hype that dwells “just around the corner.”

With the advent of modern technology, AI has taken the world by storm. How do we make it our ally and avoid mundane, repetitive tasks? Mahesh, our very own bold personality at Orel IT has this to say about Artificial Intelligence. In our tech talk roundup, he talks all about AI.

01) According to you how much of an effect has AI left on us today?

I would say a significant effect. Every day we are unknowingly or knowingly experiencing AI on our way to work, chatting online with friends browsing the web, and making online purchases. It sometimes wouldn’t really click you that it’s AI doing all the work but think about it. Ever noticed YouTube making song recommendations for you? Well, that’s all thanks to the machine learning algorithms in AI. And as surprising as it may sound, machines have started to think already!

02) What do you think is the most important sector that AI should soon integrate?

It’s quite clear that healthcare professionals have their schedules jam-packed with Coronavirus cases skyrocketing every day. I think by making AI a tech ally, it would clear the way for responding questions related to the virus more efficiently and accurately. Healthcare experts could make decisions more easily and efficiently by keeping a more organized track of rising number of patients.

03) In the AI journey where do you think we Sri Lankans stand?

As a developing country, there’s no doubt that we have a long journey to go in that aspect, but I think we could have a promising outcome. Take Orel IT for intstance; we have an excellent team of IT experts and knowledgeable researches in all our leagues. When they are given the necessary backing, they could outshine in the IT industry. With a qualified team like that,an advanced system of AI could be just around the corner in our own country quite soon.

04) Chatbot or livechat?

I’d go with both. Both have their pros and cons. Chatbots have already started to kick in at full tilt as we all can see. Sometimes you have to wait for ages for someone to get back to you. Chatbots are clearly faster than live chat responses and won’t leave you hanging as some people do! But in registering true emotions and thoughts live chat might have the upper hand. So, I think it’s not

a matter of replacing one another but a matter of making both handy in your communication process.

05) What kind of impact will AI have on the labor force across the globe?

Some people do argue that some of the jobs would be in danger as machines have already begun to perform tasks that were once unique to humans. Technology is man-made so we don’t have to feel intimidated by what we have created if we know how to use it wisely. If we do that we could create more opportunities and open more avenues to futuristic possibilities for a lot of people. As I see it, AI is a potential enabler that breaks the deadlock rather than a threat that creates one.

06) What’s the most futuristic AI-based concept you’d like to see in the future?

Maybe a machine-led war rather than one with human interference? As much as I hate war and violence, we all have to admit that it’s something inevitable in our society. Humankind from the very beginning of the time is plagued by bloodshed. The future is not a utopia without war either. Until we realize the futility of all that rage, why not shoulder the responsibility of handling disputes in the hands of intelligent machines maybe?

07) Do you think machines will overpower us one day?

In Ex-Machina style? I think that notion is an ideal story line for movie makers when producing futuristic films. But in reality, I think humans will reign over to steer the journey of humankind regardless of how advance the technology could get. Even then, yes, you need to be well educated in handling technology so you’d be wisely making it your ally, not your enemy.
